Homemade Strawberry and Raspberry Tru Fru

If you love Strawberry and Raspberry Tru Fru but don’t love the price tag, this homemade version is going to blow your mind. It’s shockingly easy to make and looks just like the real thing. Bonus: it saves a ton of money, especially in the summer when berries are on sale. These frozen chocolate-covered berries are the perfect treat for hot days, after-school snacks, or sweet bites straight from the freezer. The Tru Fru Raspberry is my favorite!

Store-bought Tru Fru is delicious but pricey, and it disappears fast! This homemade version uses just a few ingredients and comes together quickly. It’s a fun project to do with kids and makes a great addition to summer parties, holiday platters, or weeknight treats. You’ll get the same creamy, fruity, chocolatey experience, for a fraction of the cost.

What is Tru Fru

Tru Fru is a brand of frozen fruit dipped in layers of white and milk or dark chocolate, the kind you find in the freezer aisle. It's delicious, but it's also pricey and it disappears fast in our house. This homemade version gives you the same creamy, fruity, chocolate-covered bite for a fraction of the price, and you get to make it exactly how your family likes it.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Homemade Tru Fru

You only need a handful of ingredients to make this sweet frozen snack:

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Fresh raspberries
  • White chocolate chips or melting wafers
  • Milk chocolate chips or melting wafers
  • Coconut oil

Note: You can swap the milk chocolate for dark chocolate if you prefer a richer flavor.

Steps to Make Copycat Tru Fru

  1. Step 1: Wash and prep the berries, then pat them completely dry.

  1. Step 2: Melt white chocolate with coconut oil and dip berries to coat.

  1. Step 3: Chill until set, then dip again in melted milk chocolate.

  1. Step 4: Freeze until firm and store in an airtight container.

Hint: You don’t have to be precise or neat! The final chocolate coat hides any messy first layer — just have fun with it.

How Much Does Homemade Tru Fru Cost

Here's the part that makes this worth it. One batch ran me about $11 and made roughly 40 pieces, which comes out to around 28 cents each. A bag of the store version is about $7 for 16 pieces, or close to 44 cents a piece. So you're paying less per bite, getting more of them, and you can really stock up when berries go on sale in the summer.

Substitutions for This Recipe

Make it your own with easy ingredient swaps:

  • Vegan - Use dairy-free chocolate to make it vegan.
  • If you don’t have white chocolate, try a yogurt coating (melt yogurt chips).

Variations: Ways to Customize Your Tru Fru

There are so many ways to make this frozen treat your own:

  • Bananas. Slice them into coins and dip the same way. They freeze firm and taste like a frozen candy bar.
  • Blueberries. Dip them in small clusters on a toothpick since they're tiny. Great for popping straight from the freezer.
  • Pineapple. Cut into bite-size chunks and pat very dry. The sweet-tart bite is amazing under chocolate.
  • Blackberries. Work just like the raspberries and look beautiful on a party platter.
  • Dark chocolate swap. Use dark instead of milk for a deeper, less sweet flavor.
  • Sweet and salty. Add a tiny sprinkle of flaky sea salt before the final freeze.

Storage Information

Once completely frozen, store your homemade Tru Fru in an airtight container in the freezer. They’re best enjoyed straight from the freezer and stay good for up to 3 months.

Top Tip

Make sure the berries are very dry before dipping, because any moisture will make the chocolate seize or slide right off. I learned this the first time when my first few berries wouldn't hold their coating. Patting them down and letting them sit out a few minutes fixed it completely.

I found the white chocolate needed a little extra coconut oil to flow smoothly, while the milk chocolate set up fast once the berries hit the freezer.

FAQ

Can I use frozen berries instead of fresh?

I wouldn't. Fresh berries work best because frozen berries tend to release water, which can ruin the chocolate coating.

Can I skip the white chocolate layer?

You can dip in just one type of chocolate, but you'll miss the signature creamy Tru Fru flavor that comes from the white and milk layers together.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

Yes, as long as your chocolate is certified gluten-free.

How long does homemade Tru Fru last in the freezer?

Stored in an airtight container, they stay good for up to 3 months. They're best enjoyed straight from the freezer.

Why is my chocolate sliding off the berries?

It's almost always moisture. The berries need to be completely dry before you dip them, or the chocolate won't grab.

What's the best chocolate to use?

Look for chips or wafers that list cocoa butter as an ingredient rather than palm oil. They melt cleaner and give you a smoother coating.

Can I use candy melts or almond bark instead?

Yes. They melt easily and set firm, though the flavor is a little sweeter and less rich than real chocolate.

Do I have to use coconut oil?

The coconut oil thins the chocolate so it coats smoothly and gives a nice snap. Without it the chocolate is thicker and harder to dip, so I'd keep it in.

Can I make these ahead for a party?

Absolutely. They're a perfect make-ahead treat. Freeze them up to a few days early and pull them out right before serving so they don't sweat.

Homemade Tru Fru (Copycat Recipe)

This homemade version of Tru Fru uses fresh berries, white and milk chocolate, and coconut oil to create a delicious frozen treat. Just like the store-bought version but cheaper and customizable.

Ingredients Equipment Method

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb strawberries sliced (about a carton of strawberries)
  • 6 oz raspberries (about 1 standard clamshell container)
  • 8 oz white chocolate chips
  • 8 oz milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate
  • 2 teaspoon coconut oil 1 teaspoon per chocolate

Equipment

  • microwave-safe bowls
  • cutting board
  • Knife
  • tray with parchment or foil
  • airtight freezer container I used Secondz

Method
 

  1. Wash and dry berries thoroughly.
  2. Melt white chocolate and 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Dip berries and place on lined tray.
  3. Chill 30 minutes until white chocolate is firm.
  4. Melt milk chocolate with 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Dip each berry again.
  5. Chill again or freeze. Once firm, store in airtight container in the freezer.
