Craving that McDonald's Shamrock Shake serves up every March? You don’t have to wait for it to hit the menu! This homemade Shamrock Shake is even better – thick, creamy, and perfectly minty with just a few simple ingredients. Whether you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or just want a refreshing treat, this Shamrock Protein Shake (yes, you can add vanilla protein powder!) is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The Shamrock Shake McDonald's made famous has a cult following, and for good reason—its cool, minty flavor and pastel green color make it a seasonal favorite. But what if you could enjoy it anytime? Enter this homemade Shamrock Shake recipe, which captures all the nostalgia but lets you control the ingredients. You can even add a scoop of protein powder for a Shamrock Protein Shake that’s just as delicious but with an extra boost!

This was inspired by my other recipe on this site, and pairs well with this amazing sidedish recipe. Contextual, in-content links are far more valuable than a group listed at the bottom of the post.

Wondering what do Shamrock Shakes taste like? They’re sweet, creamy, and have a refreshing peppermint-vanilla flavor that’s absolutely addictive!

Substitutions

No worries if you’re missing an ingredient! Here are some simple swaps:

  • No peppermint extract? Use mint extract, but reduce the amount as it’s stronger.
  • No green food coloring? Try using a handful of spinach. Blended in will give it a natural green hue. Don't knock it until you try it!
  • No vanilla ice cream? Use a mix of frozen banana and vanilla yogurt for a creamy alternative.

Variations

Want to put your own spin on this Shamrock Milk Shake? Try these fun variations:

  • Shamrock Protein Shake – Add a scoop of vanilla or mint-flavored protein powder for a boost.
  • Dairy-Free Version – Use almond, oat, or coconut milk and dairy-free ice cream.
  • Extra Minty – Add an extra ⅛ teaspoon of peppermint extract for a stronger mint flavor.
  • Chocolate Twist – Drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring in your shake.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Measuring spoons
  • Ice cream scoop or spoon for the ice cream
  • Tall glasses

Storage

This homemade Shamrock Shake is best enjoyed fresh, but if needed, you can store it in the freezer for up to an hour. Stir well before drinking.

Top Tip

For an ultra-thick shake, use less milk and let the ice cream soften for a few minutes before blending.

FAQ

What do Shamrock Shakes taste like?

They have a creamy vanilla base with a light, refreshing peppermint flavor – like a scoop of mint ice cream in milkshake form!

Can I make this a Shamrock Protein Shake?

Absolutely! Just blend in a scoop of vanilla or mint-flavored protein powder.

Is this the same as the Shamrock Shake McDonald's makes?

It’s pretty close, but even better because you can customize the ingredients and sweetness!
